Programs

Helen Keller once said, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing [at all]..." That's how we view life at Verdun.

Verdun Adventure Bound programs are led by motivated, highly competent and experienced individuals. Programs are designed to support and promote personal growth and teach land stewardship using high adventure, nature trails, ecology studies and primitive camping. A commitment to safety and "Challenge by Choice" govern all Adventure Bound programs. Participants can fully participate at their will or elect to observe activities. Participants come together as a group after each activities to share experiences, different perspectives and lessons learned.

Verdun's programs are structured to meet the goals and/or needs of the group and foster:

  • High self-esteem and regard for accomplishments, both accrual and potential
  • Respect for the ideas, abilities and viewpoints of others
  • Understanding and appreciation for our natural environment and its ecology

Custom programs can specifically focus on group dynamics or teambuilding, goal setting, decision-making, conflict resolution, creating independence, increased self-worth, developing self-reliance, perseverance, addiction issues, etc.

Consistant with all programs are the elements of Challenge, Teambuilding, Nature, and Contemplative activities:

  • High Adventure - Challenge and Teambuilding courses include kayaking, canoeing, rope courses, rock-climbing, caving, and orienteering. Swimming instruction is also available.
  • Nature Activities - Forest, meadow, stream and wetland trails traverse over 86 acre of native Virginia habitat.
  • Ecology Studies - The study of nature and relationships and the Teaching Greenhouse, Teaching Apiary, Ducks Unlimited® Wetland, and the Gray Water Facility development, are used by environmentalists to teach ecology lessons.

Primitive Camping - Over 15 secluded campsites, a large pavilion with outdoor fireplace for group meetings and meals, and a multipurpose building with rest rooms, first aid station, and classroom, as well as optional large tents and portable toilets contribute to the camping experience at Verdun.

Contemplative Activities include focused reading, group discussions, journal-keeping, and solitary reflections.

At the completion of each course, most participants benefit from increased self-awareness, new or enhanced relationships, and improved living skills.
